"I am currently a first-year medical student at the University of Sheffield, and it is with confidence I say that studying Biomedical Science at Sheffield is what got me here.

"The structure of the course is such that I gained an in-depth understanding of the human body, from the level of molecules to the level of organ systems. I learnt the science of how the body develops from a single cell into a multi-functional organism, the science behind the actions of drugs, the science of what happens to the body during disease.

"I think one of the most important things that the department has provided me, is the ability to use this scientific knowledge in more creative applications. For example, during my second year, I collaborated with five others to plan a campaign to promote awareness of pancreas transplants among teenagers. Our successful collaboration placed us third out of thirty-four participant groups. We implemented our knowledge of the gross and functional anatomy of the pancreas to create a dog-like mascot, due to its anatomical and historical relevance.

One of the best things about biomedical science is the support network that is available to students to achieve their goals. My tutors were extremely supportive throughout my time in the department, from giving me advice when I have been struggling academically, to being extremely encouraging and motivating with my application to study medicine.

"In addition to the academic knowledge, biomedical science also provided me with the opportunity to become a good teacher - which is a valuable skill to have as a medical student. I was a BMS-PASS (peer-assisted study session) leader for the final two years of my degree. I worked with two others to plan and lead weekly sessions to facilitate the first year students’ transition into university. These sessions involved discussions of lectures, coupled with guiding the students to sources of help if I was unable answer their questions.

"One of the best things about biomedical science is the support network that is available to students to achieve their goals. My tutors were extremely supportive throughout my time in the department, from giving me advice when I have been struggling academically, to being extremely encouraging and motivating with my application to study medicine. They have provided me with honest feedback that I used to improve and succeed in my application.

"This is why I am confident in saying that the department is what got me here, and it is why I will always be grateful for my experience as a Biomedical Science undergraduate."
