The Department of Economics at the University of Sheffield welcomed Professor David Metcalf, Director of Labour Market Enforcement to give the 2017 Knoop Lecture - the department's annual public lecture.

The title of the lecture was Stopping exploitation of labour: Enforcing regulatory standards to boost compliance

The role of the Director of Labour Market Enforcement is to set out a strategy to coordinate the work for all employment enforcement bodies to stamp out the exploitation of workers. In the lecture Sir David Metcalf examined the challenge of ensuring all workers in the UK are paid fairly, what sectors are most vulnerable from rogue employers and the best way to detect and penalise those that don't comply.

Biography

Professor Sir David Metcalf is Emeritus Professor at the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics. He was appointed Director of Labour Market Enforcement in January 2017. Previously he was a founding member of the Low Pay Commission (1997-2007) and Chair of the Migration Advisory Committee (2007-2016).
