Description

International Journalism week 2021, which took place on 8-11 November 2021, was the second IJW event of that year. It focused on the theme 'Media Freedom in the Digital Age'.

New forms of digital communication and technologies have posed a variety of challenges for journalists across the world. They have also opened more opportunities for journalists to engage in investigative journalism. Large amounts of data can shed light on cronyism and corruption of governments. Swift and efficient processing of the data can help journalists gain access into governments’ statements and reveal malpractices where they exist. Recent incidents have shown that governments and corporations can use digital tools and hackers to compromise journalists and even put their lives under the threat.

IJW 2021 featured experts in journalism and related professions who will speak on the impact of digital technology on journalism. These talks provided insight into the Pegasus spyware; the safety of journalists; hybrid models of journalistic investigations; media freedom in Africa and Asia; and tips for cybersecurity, amongst others.
