conv4

We are no longer accepting applications for conversation courses as the courses are not running in Autumn 2019.

Designed as a ‘light-touch’ alternative to General Language Courses, Conversation Courses are primarily intended for learners wishing to reactivate, maintain, or consolidate their speaking skills at a given level.

With two-hour, small-group weekly sessions over 11 weeks led by a native-speaking tutor, you will enhance your vocabulary, practise grammar, share your cultural, social, or political knowledge of the target country, and learn to express yourself with more spontaneity and confidence in a friendly environment.

Each week is centred on a specific topic of interest to all. Minimum preparation homework based on reading or listening material is provided in advance, and activities done in class (e.g. role-plays, discussions, debates) are intended to be as interactive as possible. Additional resources and activities are available online through a dedicated virtual learning environment to consolidate what was covered in class.

Although the course is not formally assessed, you will receive regular individual and collective oral feedback from your tutor, and written feedback at the end of the semester, along with a Certificate of Attendance provided that you attended at least 70% of classes.

Entry Requirements

Intermediate: GCSE grade A* or equivalent (e.g. a lower qualification, or no qualification, but with experience of interacting with native-speakers in the target country at the equivalent level, a qualification at level A2 or B1- of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Advanced: A Level grade A or equivalent (e.g. a lower qualification, or no qualification, but with experience of interacting with native-speakers in the target country at the equivalent level, a qualification at level B1+/B2- of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Notes:
If you are not sure which level would suit you best, we will invite you for a short interview to assess it together.

Progression

Conversation Courses are not intended to offer a progression to the next level of language competence as defined for MLTC courses, especially with regard to grammar and writing skills. For this reason, we would recommend that you take our Higher Intermediate 2, or preferably the Advanced 1, General course before progressing from the Intermediate to Advanced Conversation course.

If you would like, you can stay on the same level and re-take the Intermediate or Advanced Conversation Course once.

Availability

Conversation Courses are open to all, University of Sheffield students and members of staff, as well as members of the public. You will need a working Google account to access our resources.

Notes:

These courses cannot be taken for credits, as part of the Languages for All fee-waiver scheme, or as part of the Doctoral Development Programme (DDP).

Maximum number of students per group: 15
