Levels, Entry Requirements, and Learning Outcomes

Whether you join Beginner 1 or Beginner 2, the focus is on practical communication, especially spoken communication, but not exclusively... You will need to be able to read a menu before you can order food, and being able to fill-in a short form or write a very basic email may also prove handy. Awareness of local customs and cultural sensitivities, or simply being able to identify the best places to visit are also just as important to make the most of a holiday break. For these reasons, your course will include a strong cultural element, and your tutor will endeavour to tailor their input and feedback to your specific destination.

Beginner 1

If you have never studied the language before or only have very faint recollections of it, you will take the Beginner 1 course and learn how to interact in the most basic situations, be it with a customs’ officer, a hotel receptionist, a restaurant waiter, a market vendor, or even the local GP. Intended for complete beginners, this course includes basic grammar and vocabulary which will enable you to build and understand simple sentences about yourself and your immediate surroundings.
After this course, you could continue on the Beginner 2 level described below, or, after a stay in the target country, join the Beginner 2 or Post-Beginner 1 levels of our academic programme..

Beginner 2

If you have studied the language before at a basic level but not quite up to a GCSE, or perhaps a long time ago, the Beginner 2 course will revive any previous knowledge that you may have and build on it to help you get the very best of your holiday experience, enabling you to maintain a short, simple conversation so that you can enjoy a more authentic local experience. Topics are similar to those covered in Beginner 1 (accommodation, food, shopping, transports, health, etc.), but based on more complex scenarios.
After this course and a stay in the target country, you could join the Post-Beginner 1 or Post-Beginner 2 levels of our academic programme.

Learning & Teaching Approach

Teaching is delivered in small groups (minimum: 8; maximum: 15), with a fully-trained native-speaking teacher.
Classes are intended to be as interactive as possible, and your active participation will be required.
In class, your tutor will introduce new topics and ask you to put them into practice straight away, either as a group, in pairs, or on your own. After providing any additional explanation, clarification, or feedback you may need, the tutor will then proceed to the next topic.

At home, you will complete a few activities after each class to reinforce what you have learned, or prepare for discussions on cultural themes. To get the most from the course, we recommend you spend a minimum of 3 hours per week working on your own outside classes.

For most courses, you will be asked to purchase a textbook which will be used for class activities and homework. This textbook will be complemented by handouts and a dedicated website on which you will find:

• a detailed class-by-class course outline
• course handouts
• additional activities and resources to help you consolidate what was covered in class and to explore other aspects of the language and culture at your own pace.
• all resources will remain available to participants throughout the summer.

Please note you are required to have an active Gmail account (Gmail email address) when registering to enable us to give you access to our resources. You can register here if you do not have a Google account.

Timetable Please check the right-hand ‘Timetable, Venues and Textbooks’ tab above
Venue Courses take place on the main University of Sheffield campus (10-minute walk from the City Centre). Information regarding disabled access is available here. Information on how to travel to the university campus can be found here. Please check the right-hand ‘Timetable and Textbooks’ tab above for the exact venue in which each course takes place.
Cancellations & Refunds

If you would like to cancel your registration, please use the following form at least three working days before the first class:

Please note:

• The full course fee will be refunded to you if you cancel your registration at least 15 days before the first class.
• For cancellations made 3 to 14 days before the first class, please note that a cancellation charge of £20 will be retained.
• We are not able to accept cancellations in the three working days before classes start, or once they have started. The full course fee will be retained.

Courses will only run subject to a minimum of 8 attendees being registered. If we are unable to run a course, we will inform you as soon as possible, or at least 2 working days before the first class, and your course fee will be fully refunded.

If a class has to be cancelled, for example due to tutor illness, we will aim to reschedule it within the dates of the course, either at the same times on a different week-day, or at a different time on a Saturday.

Please note that we do not offer partial refunds of the course fee for classes that you are unable to attend.
