Sustainability Week 2018

Join us for a week of events to mark the launch of the University’s new sustainability strategy.

Commencing Monday 15th October, each day will see a different talk about how we’re using our power as a research-led university to tackle interlinked social, environmental and economic challenges through ambitious, interdisciplinary thinking.

Monday 15th October

Sustainability Strategy Launch

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gill Valentine and Chief Operating Officer, Andy Dodman, will host the launch of the University’s new sustainability strategy. Hear how the strategy has been developed and how you can get involved in shaping it over the next year.

Catering will be provided on a pay-as-you-feel basis by the Real Junk Food Project Sheffield.

Students' Union: A student-led sustainability strategy - launch, sustainability fair and workshops

(a student-focused event, staff places limited)

Both the University of Sheffield and the Students' Union are publicly launching their Sustainability strategies this month, but what does this mean for students and how can we input? Presentations by SU staff, Officers and the student Sustainability Committee, workshops, a "sustainability fair" chance to chat to environmental societies, and free vegan food.

Professor Tony Ryan OBE talks plastic and waste, busting myths about the sustainability of some commonly-used items.

Professor Duncan Cameron, Tracy Wray and Mel Kee, our sustainability leads for academic services, professional services and students, will discuss and answer questions relating to the University’s approach to managing sustainability and strategy development.

Thursday 18th October

Sustainability talk: The UK’s most sustainable cup of coffee

Enjoy a free coffee on us as Professor Duncan Cameron is joined by colleagues from the University’s commercial services team to explain how our research and procurement decisions are coming together to try to make the UK’s most sustainable cup of coffee.

Jake Nickles, from the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, explains how the University of Sheffield has taken over an abandoned school to grow salad for our food outlets - and how urban farms could feed us in the future.
