EEE Professor inspires engineers of the future

Professor Merlyne de Souza has been awarded one of the new Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious Public Engagement Awards to help inspire engineers of the future.

Professor de Souza at an outreach event in the Winter Gardens, Sheffield.

What will 'Engineer your future: a taster in careers in electronics' consist of?

"Year 12 students aged 16-17 in and around the Sheffield region will be able to attend a summer workshop in 2021 and 2022 (covid-19 permitting) where we will showcase upcoming applications of electronics in Clean energy, Artificial Intelligence and automotive.

Engaging and fun activities have been planned such as a “tear down of Tesla parts” and visits to our labs in 5G telecommunications, Nanoscience fabrication and power conversion.

There will be a chance for the students to enjoy a hands-on electronics exercise where they will design their own FM surveillance transmitter that they can take home with them.

Finally, each pupil will be paired with a mentor from University and industry to facilitate a relationship, well beyond the end of the workshops (organised in collaboration with the EDT and Work-wise)."

Why did you get involved in the Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious scheme?

"It aligns with my interests to increase awareness of careers in engineering. My career has given me so much reward that I hope to share it with others."

Why do you feel schemes such as this are important to educate and inspire the next generation of engineers?

"There is a severe shortage of skills, especially in critical sectors such as telecommunications and power electronics that are crucial to the Government's ambitions to reduce CO2 emissions.  We desperately need more efficient technologies and engineers to address this global challenge."

Why did you become an Electronic and Electrical Engineer and what do you enjoy most about it?

"I became an Electronic and Electrical Engineer because I like problem-solving.  What I enjoy most about it is its multidisciplinarity- no two days are ever the same and I’m always learning new things!"
