Thesis title

Akbar's thesis title is: Unveiling Greenwashing in Indonesia Corporations’ Sustainability Reports

About the researcher

Akbar joined University of Sheffield as PhD student in accounting in October 2024.

His research background is based on the observation of how companies express their contributions to the environmental and biodiversity issues, yet the environmental and biodiversity degradation remains ongoing. Drawing on such conditions, he attempts to critically investigate greenwashing phenomenon in Indonesia through accountability lens. Hosting endemic flora and fauna, Indonesia encounters environmental and biodiversity deterioration. Following the tradition of critical accounting studies, his case study research builds its theoretical framework upon cultural political economy (CPE) and counter-accounting. The expected findings of his research can contribute to the deliberation of broader stakeholders in sustainability issues and contextualisation of sustainability framework or standards development.

He is a lecturer in accounting department at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia. His research interests include Islamic accounting, Islamic alms (zakat, infaq, shodaqoh), accounting information systems, and sustainability. He has published an article in Journal of Islamic Monetary Economics and Finance and a book about ethical cases in Indonesia state-owned enterprises. Besides academics, he involves in several practical experiences associated with Islamic alms, energy, and management accounting.

His doctoral study is funded by Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP). He is also a scholar in Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures.
