Description

Sustainability at Sheffield events series

Ensuring food security for urban populations in a sustainable way presents a significant challenge. Urban Horticulture (UH) is the production of fruits and vegetables within and around cities, is increasingly being recognised as a mechanism to improve food security. In the UK and Europe, allotments are one of the major sources of UH production in cities. The main aim of my research will be to explore mechanisms to sustainably improve the nutrient content of UH crops, with particular focus on urban allotments. This will be done by exploring the effect of soil health, mycorrhizal fungi, and sustainable land management techniques.

Tanya Wilson is a Sustainable Urban Horticulture PhD student.
