Groups Our department has been research-led for over 100 years and our academic staff are organised into five overarching groups, the main ones being Water Engineering and Structural Engineering. You are here Home Research Groups Water Engineering Our urban water research groups is the UK's largest and includes Environmental Fluid Mechanics, Groundwater Protection & Restoration, Sustainable Drainage Systems & Urban Drainage, Water Distribution Systems & Infrastructure, and Catchments & River Flooding. Water Engineering Structural Engineering Our Structural Engineering group is one of the largest of its kind in the UK and includes the following Research Groups: Concrete Structures, Steel & Composite Structures, Earthquake Engineering, Computational Mechanics & Design, Fire Engineering and Intelligent Infractructure. Structural Engineering Blast & Impact Our research covers experimental quantification of high explosive blast loading (including buried charges), high strain rate material characterisation (solids and geomaterials), numerical analysis and machine learning for blast in complex environments, structural response calculations, and development of quick running methods. Blast & Impact Geotechnical Engineering This research group focuses on physical modelling, particle scale studies and the application of numerical optimisation in geotechnical engineering. Geotechnical Engineering Resources, Infrastructure Systems & Built Environments This interdisciplinary research group focuses on planning, policy and design for the creation of a built environment that allows humanity to thrive within the carrying capacity of the planet. Resources, Infrastructure Systems & Built Environments Our Remarkable Research 2019 We're in Top 4 in the UK in the Research Excellence Framework (REF), in all three recognised measures of research excellence in the Civil and Construction Engineering Unit of Assessment.
