Author, translator and activist Cy Lecerf Maulpoix will discuss the political importance of translation and disseminating queer archives such as those of Edward Carpenter.

Together with the Nederlandse Vereniging we lay on a special production - written and directed by Filip De Ceuster - of a story inspired by the writing of Toon Tellegen. For the stage we created a special backdrop with the help of over 150 volunteers from all over the Low Countries and beyond.

Atangana Bekono won the prestigious Charlotte Köhler Stipendium for new Dutch writers. Het first collection of poems, How the First Sparks became Visible was translated into English by David Colmer in 2021. Her first novel, Confrontatie, was published in Autumn 2020 by Lebowski Publishers.

Johan Fretz, Dutch author and performance artist

Dutch author and comedian Johan Fretz presents his latest novel Onder de Paramariboom. He has worked with Sheffield students of Dutch on an English translation of the first two chapters.

In the novel Fretz travels to Suriname, the country of his mother's birth to discovers the part of his dual heritage he has pushed away. Kindly sponsored by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Farce of the Fisherman

Introduced by Dr Charlotte Steenbrugge, produced by Sam Dickinson

With the generous support of the Representation of the Flemish Government in London we can bring to the stage: The Farce of the Fisherman. This short play from 16th Century Flanders was written by the Bruges playwright Cornelis Everaert and translated into English by Ben Parsons and Bas Jongenelen. The evening will kick off with an introduction by Dr. Charlotte Steenbrugge. The play is produced in collaboration with the School of English.

European Champion Slam Poetry and 2017 Writer in Residence Carmien Michels performs a number of her Slam Poems in Dutch (with English subtitles)

Carmien Michels is a Flemish author and prize-winning performer. In 2016 she was crowned Slam Poet of the Netherlands and since November 2016 she can call herself Slam Poetry Champion of Europe.

Carmien Michels is the Taalunie Writer in Residence and during her stay in the UK students of Dutch will translate Michels' account of her stay in Münster as part of the European Literature project citybooks.eu.

'“Kom ‘ns een handje helpen”: Sociolinguistic constraints on the use of nuance particles in spoken Dutch'

Carol Fehringer's main research area is theoretical morphology, with particular emphasis on German, Dutch and English. She also writes on phonology, specifically metrical phonology, and its application in standard Dutch and in Low German dialects.

Dr Fehringer has written two pedagogical grammars: a reference grammar of Dutch and a context-based grammar of German.
