My studies at university gave me an invaluable grounding in linguistics and in the social application of theory
What are your main responsibilities?
Editing copy written by journalists, managing web-published articles and liaising with a print team.
What other jobs have you had since graduating?
Journalist at Grimsby Live and Hull Live, and pub manager at the Blind Monkey in Walkley.
How has your degree from the School of English and your time at the University of Sheffield helped you in your career?
My studies at the university gave me an invaluable grounding in linguistics and in the social application of theory. It also taught me about my limits in terms of workload and deadlines and set me up to become an effective journalist (even if I didn't know it at the time). It affirmed a desire to know more about language and how people respond to language that has fascinated me ever since.
What is your greatest achievement to date?
Being promoted into an editorial role within two years of beginning my career in journalism.
What career advice would you give to a student interested in studying English?
Have a think about your interests and when you get to university drive into them without hesitation. There is no other point in your life where you are able to indulge a thirst for knowledge and have the brains and the resources so close at hand.
