My primary research interests lie in nineteenth-century literature, particularly Victorian poetry.

I work on Romantic poetry, literature, and arts, and on twentieth-century British and Irish poetry. I’m interested in philosophy, poetics, and on the influence of Romanticism upon modern culture and literature.

Non-linguists’ perceptions of language variation. In particular, present research examines real-time reactions to regional speech, and in particular which features naïve listeners respond to.

I was appointed as a lecturer in Romantic Literature here at Sheffield University in 2002, became a senior lecturer in 2010, and was promoted to a personal chair in Romantic Literature in 2015.
