I enjoy the seminars as I find the reading can be complex and the teachers are excellent in developing my understanding as well as helping broaden my opinions.

Why did you choose to study at Sheffield?

I chose to study here based on the range of modules offered as well as a love for the campus which stood out from other universities.

Has your experience so far been what you expected?

In first year my experience was limited due to Covid, however I feel in second year I have had the true experience of what being a history student should be. I was not a part of the history society in first year and I have joined this year. I have enjoyed everything they have had to offer and would recommend that any undergraduate should join as it is a great way to meet fellow history students.

What do you particularly enjoy about your degree programme?

I enjoy the seminars as I find the reading can be complex and the teachers are excellent in developing my understanding as well as helping broaden my opinions.

What modules are you studying this year? Are there any modules that you have particularly enjoyed during your degree so far and why?

In second year I have enjoyed the flexibility to refine my areas of interest in history. This term I am studying the Becket affair, historians and history and making of modern China. The Historians and History module has been extremely helpful in my understanding of history and the way that historians work. It has also given me insight into the different approaches to history and the complexity of the subject.

If you’ve undertaken any extra-curricular activities, what do you feel these have added to your time here?

History netball has been a great way to meet people on the history course and develop my fitness at the same time. The socials for netball have helped promote team comradery and widened my friendship group.

Anything else that you want to say?

Overall I have had an extremely positive experience in studying in Sheffield. What has struck me as unique to the course in Sheffield is its flexibility in allowing you to pick modules from other departments. Last year I studied a module in Shakespeare which was an interesting companion to my other history modules. There are plenty of opportunities to get help from the department if you're struggling and it feels like a welcoming, helpful community that has its students best interests at heart.
