We are seeking applications for studentships in all areas of the Department's research interests available to Home, EU and International applicants.
We offer both full time and part time study options with a minimum term of 4 years and a maximum of 6 years.

Biomedical materials have advanced dramatically over the last 50 years and continue to evolve today. With a rapidly growing and ageing population, there is greater demand for more effective and cost-effective healthcare interventions, and this CDT will train an interdisciplinary cohort of students to compete in this field.
Set up to address the critical shortage of doctoral level metallic material specialists in the UK, the CDT is a partnership between two internationally recognised Centres of Excellence in metallic materials at the Universities of Sheffield and Manchester.
Graduates from physical science and engineering disciplines are trained in fundamental metallurgical science and engineering as well as undertaking an industry sponsored, multi-disciplinary cutting-edge doctoral project through our 4 year programme.
Collaborating with Manchester, Lancaster, Leeds and Liverpool Universities, we work with all the UK's major industrial and regulatory bodies to develop future research leaders to support the UK's strategic nuclear programmes.
Next Generation Nuclear follows on from the Nuclear FiRST CDT, which recruited its final cohort of students in 2013. The first intake of students for this new programme began in September 2014 and will include between 14 and 18 fully funded PhD studentships across universities involved in the Nuclear First partnership.
PhD with integrated masters
This option combines a one-year specialised taught MSc programme with a three-year individual research PhD.
We recommend this option for applicants who are specifically seeking a four-year programme and/or those wishing to enhance their specialist knowledge and skills before commencing their research.
Please note the transfer from the MSc onto the PhD will require successful completion of the MSc component at the level specified in the offer letter.
Cohort start dates
The Engineering Graduate School (EGS) provides support for both current and prospective students, from applications and funding to developing your career. You will become part of a community and will be able to share experiences and provide mutual support. To maximise these advantages for your PhD experience at Sheffield, we operate a policy of cohort recruitment. This means that we would prefer you to start at the beginning of Semester 1 (late September) or Semester 2 (early February).
Our preferred start dates for 2017-18 and 2018-19 are as follows:
- Semester 2 2017-18 (5 February 2018)
- Semester 1 2018-19 (24 September 2018)
- Semester 2 2018-19 (4 February 2019)
If the fixed dates are not convenient for you, you may choose an alternative date, which will require the approval of the Departmental Postgraduate Admissions Tutor.
