Gemma Newsome, Senior Research Support Officer

In 2021 I moved from a technical role in the School of Biosciences to an administrative role in the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering (CIV). This was at a time when Covid-19 restrictions were in place but even in those unprecedented times I found CIV to be a very welcoming and collegiate department and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting colleagues face to face once the restrictions were lifted. I have found the department to be very supportive of my career development and hybrid and flexible working has ensured that I can be present for my family whilst increasing my part time working hours.

In the Civil & Structural Engineering department, I'm continuously driven by the impact our research has on society, ensuring that every effort contributes to meaningful advancements in infrastructure and societal well-being. As an early career researcher, our department's culture of knowledge sharing and collaboration enables me to grow as an Engineer as I build relationships with industry partners and academic colleagues.
