Richard discusses why he chose to study Environmental Science at Sheffield and offers tips to prospective students...

Which course are you currently studying?

Environmental science

Why did you choose to study this course at the University of Sheffield?

It is a Russell Group University and the course is highly regarded for science subjects. The University is also a research institute so you're learning from people at the cutting edge of research. Sheffield is a great city, I have travelled and there’s no other city in the UK I would have preferred to study at.

What are your favourite parts of the course so far?

I have enjoyed most of the course as it has progressed. I can see the relevance of one module building on the other and how a broad understanding of the subject can help you choose where your interests lie.

How do you think your course will prepare you for a job in the future?

I have chosen to write my dissertation on air quality which has really interested me and now I am looking to go on to enrol in a masters course to further my knowledge of AQ and prepare me for a career in industry or in research.

What skills do you think you have learned from your course which will help you in the future?

My confidence to look at projects, break them down and manage the workload has surprised me. There have been times when I have felt overwhelmed but now I know that I can stick to commitments and see them through.

Do you have any tips for students looking to study here?

Come to the Uni, have a look around the city and chat to other students. I may be bias as Sheffield is my home town, however the community of people who come to Sheffield to study and never leave speaks volumes about the place.
