Journalists honour Sheffield lecturer

Tony receiving his gold badge and certificate

A University of Sheffield lecturer has been awarded the gold badge of the National Union of Journalists in recognition of his work for fellow journalists.

Tony Harcup, senior lecturer in the Department of Journalism Studies, travelled to the union’s annual conference in Belfast in April to pick up the honour.

Before joining the university in 2005, Tony worked for alternative and mainstream media as well as freelancing for many years. The official citation described him as the “cornerstone” of his local NUJ branch for more than two decades and also highlighted his work within the union at national level.

It continued: “By the time Tony’s students complete their courses, they have not only benefited from his professionalism and experience, but are also well aware of the vital role the NUJ plays in the life of journalists.”
