Our Learning Technologies in EAP course is an online programme designed to help EAP teachers feel more confident and capable using technology in their classrooms and with their students.

Learning Technologies in EAP: A Practical Online Course for Teachers is a finalist of the 15th British Council ELTons Awards for Innovation in English Language Teaching 2017 in the Innovations in Teacher Resources category. This product has been selected as a finalist by a panel of experts from among 115 international products, publications and services as meeting the stringent criteria of innovation and practical functionality.

Who is it for?

If you are an EAP teacher, see value in using technology but lack the confidence to go into the classroom and try things out, this course is for you. Or maybe you’ve tried using technology with students in the classroom but things haven’t gone as successfully as you hoped. This course will give you the confidence and skill set to use technology comfortably in class and to advise students on how they can use technology outside the classroom for self-study purposes.

Please note that this is a practical course, so it is strongly recommended that you only take the course if you will actually be teaching students during it. This will make it far more meaningful as you can try out things on a weekly basis and share your experiments with the other people on the course.

What will you learn?

Over the eleven weeks, you will learn:

  • How to use a range of mobile and web apps effectively in class to engage and enhance student learning
  • How to use your VLE (e.g. Blackboard and Moodle) to promote interaction between the students and you
  • How to develop students’ academic writing skills using collaborative cloud documents such as Google Docs or Microsoft Office Online
  • How online tools can help you implement the ‘flipped’ classroom model in your teaching
  • How to critically evaluate your use of technology and decide whether it is appropriate in a particular context
  • How to develop students’ academic reading and vocabulary development by using corpus tools to analyse texts and lexis
  • How to create interactive online materials for students to access across a range of skills, both in and outside of the classroom.

Every week has practical suggestions that can be quickly and easily implemented in the classroom.

Each module follows a cycle of experiencing a particular technology as a student, reflecting on that experience, trying it out in the classroom and then reflecting further on how it went. Clear instructions for how to use the technology is provided through simple step-by-step guides, and there are also regular tips on other technology tools you can use in your classes.

Course dates and study hours

The next course will run for 10 weeks from 29th September to 15th December 2017. On average you will need to spend around 3-4 hours a week engaging with the course materials and your fellow participants to get the most out of the course. A certificate of completion will be awarded to all participants who successfully finish the course.

Tuition Fee

The course will cost £300 for an individual. If an institution pays in bulk for 5 or more participants, they will receive a 20% discount on the total cost.

Scholarship places

The funds from the paid participants on the course will contribute towards allowing five teachers from developing countries to participate on the course.

David Read Profile PictureDavid Read is Director of Technology-Enhanced Learning at the English Language Teaching Centre. He has been working in EFL for over twenty years and has worked in eleven different countries, including Greece, Morocco, Serbia, Korea and Kyrgyzstan. He is a Cambridge CELTA tutor and a certified Google Teacher and has years of experience running online and blended teaching and training programmes.


Nick Murgatroyd Profile PictureNicholas Murgatroyd is the Learning Technologies Coordinator at the English Language Teaching Centre. He has been working in EFL for over fifteen years and has worked in the Czech Republic, Spain and Mexico. He first became interested in online learning while working as Director of Distance Learning for the Anglo-Mexican Cultural Foundation, and has since developed online materials as both editor and writer for several publishers.
