Silver Athena SWAN award for Department
The Chemistry Department was awarded an Athena SWAN Silver Award in the latest Athena Swan awards round.
Run by the Equality Challenge Unit, Athena SWAN awards recognize commitment to gender equality in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine) subjects. To gain a Silver Award the Department has demonstrated the impact of its proactive approach to supporting the careers of female staff and students and to making the Department a place where all can thrive and reach their potential. In gaining the award the Department joins an elite group of Russell group Chemistry Departments who are also holders of Athena Swan Silver.
Dr Sarah Staniland, chair of the Equality and Diversity committee of the department of Chemistry , commented “Delivering on our action plan for our Bronze award and submitting this recent Athena SWAN Silver award is a critical ongoing process: To ensure we assess ourselves, think and implement changes that really affect our department for the benefit of everyone has been very rewarding. I am thrilled the department has obtained the silver award in recognition of this valuable and continuing work to make this department a great place to work and study for all."
In related news, the University of Sheffield was awarded an institutional silver Athena SWAN Award, making it part of a select group of only nine universities holding silver institution awards. For details, please see here.
