Civil and Structural Engineering

Our degree in Civil and Structural Engineering combines the core topics required to become a corporate member of the Institution of Civil Engineers with a wide variety of bespoke modules designed to meet the needs of the structural engineers of tomorrow. Sheffield graduates are highly sought after, and many take up key positions in industry. For example, the key consultant engineer for the Millennium Eye (with overall responsibility for approval of the design) was Sheffield graduate John Roberts.

Ten of our lecturers are structural specialists - making Sheffield the right place to study if you value the breadth and depth of the knowledge of your tutors.

Design modules form a central thread running throughout all four years of the course. The course also reflects the fact that structures are increasingly designed using computers. You will be given instruction on how to use state-of-the-art structural analysis software and provided with a thorough grounding in the underlying physical and mathematical principles on which the software is based.

The content of our courses is reviewed annually to make sure it is current and relevant. Individual modules may be updated or withdrawn in response to discoveries through our world-leading research, funding changes, professional accreditation requirements, student or employer feedback, curriculum review, staff availability, and variations in student numbers. In the event of a material change the University will inform students in good time and will take reasonable steps to minimise disruption.
