Dominic McHugh appears on BBC TV’s Michael Grade’s Stars of the Musical Theatre

TV imageOn January 2, Lecturer in Musicology Dr Dominic McHugh appeared on the documentary Michael Grade’s Stars of the Musical Theatre on BBC4. The programme dealt with the history of the musical, and included interviews with numerous legendary Broadway figures including Joel Grey, Chita Rivera, Michael Ball, Elaine Paige, Jonathan Pryce and Harold Prince.

Dominic was the only scholar to be interviewed by Lord Grade on the programme, and he was featured several times, most notably in a section dealing with his groundbreaking research into Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady. It was after reading his book Loverly: The Life and Times of My Fair Lady that Lord Grade and the show’s producers invited him to appear on the programme.

The documentary also covered the recent Sheffield Theatres production of My Fair Lady – directed by Daniel Evans and starring Dominic West – for which Dr McHugh provided a foyer exhibition and programme notes.
Dominic commented: “It was exciting to be asked to appear onscreen alongside so many theatrical stars, as well as to be interviewed by Michael Grade. I am always delighted to be able to engage new audiences with my research, and it was an honour to represent the university on national television.”

The programme was repeated on 3 and 7 January, and will be rebroadcast several times in 2014.
