Degree: MChem Chemistry with Study in Industry and PhD in Polymer Chemistry

After graduating with a PhD in polymer chemistry, Liam went on to work for a fast-moving consumer goods company as an ice-cream research scientist.

“I first came to Sheffield to do an undergraduate degree in Chemistry with Study in Industry. I’d developed an interest in science at school and had selected a number of institutions that were strong in Chemistry to continue my education, but right from the outset I felt at home when I visited Sheffield. This was a feeling that stuck with me through the coming years, and after I graduated I took up a PhD position in polymer chemistry and finally moved on to a post-doctoral research role.

“Over my time in Sheffield, I was afforded too many excellent experiences to be able to mention them all here, but suffice to say the university was pivotal in making these a possibility. I was particularly thankful for the financial support offered by the university during my undergraduate degree (something that I’m sure will resonate with many prospective students today), the inspirational teaching and being able to gain exposure to some of the truly cutting edge science that Sheffield and the wider community are developing.

“Although it was with a heavy heart that I left Sheffield last year (as it is also an exceptional place to live as well as work), I’m extremely grateful for all of the time I spent there. Without a doubt I would not have been able to obtain my current role without the qualifications, transferable skills and network I developed at Sheffield. I now work for a fast-moving consumer goods company as an ice-cream research scientist – I’m not sure that would’ve made my top 100 guesses when I first started my university career! I love this new role as I’m able to use the skills and knowledge I’ve gained to branch out into an entirely new area and ultimately, continue to learn. There is also the added bonus of an ice cream tasting session every once in a while…

“I’m proud when I tell people where I studied and I think this is one of the best endorsements for the university that I can give. I’m confident that future students will be able to proliferate this sentiment.”
