Entry requirements for masters degrees

To take one of our MA courses you must have one of the following:

  • a good undergraduate degree (we will consider a 2:2 if we are sufficiently impressed by your potential)
  • an alternative qualification approved by the University as degree equivalent
  • substantial previous work experience in a media-related role

For MSc Science Communication you'll need a first or upper second class BSc or BEng in subject related to biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, physics, psychology or medicine.

We're happy to consider applications from mature students.

English language requirements

You must be proficient in written and spoken English, so you can access the course fully. If you're applying from outside the UK, we'll ask you to provide evidence that you have an acceptable English language qualification.

If English is not your first language, you must submit a certificate from a recognised English language test (scans and photocopies are acceptable).

The online application system allows you to attach files. Please use this feature to send us your IELTS or other English language certificate together with your application.

Please see the individual masters course pages to find the IELTS score required for each degree.

If you have not yet obtained an English language qualification, you can still apply. We may give you a conditional offer based on you obtaining the English qualification later. You can do this by taking a course at the University's English Language Teaching Centre.

To calculate the IELTS equivalent score of other English language tests, see our comparison table.
