The Department of Sociological Studies consists of an integrated body of academics.
Through their particular interests, members of the Department demonstrate a strong commitment to both theoretical concerns at the leading edge of critical sociology and informing international as well as national social policy, social work and welfare. We also have world-leading expertise in digital society. We are committed to developing innovative collaborations and disseminating our work as widely as possible.
Building on these strengths the aim of the Department is to bring a critical sociological approach to further understanding of the lived experiences of individuals, including the complex relationships between individuals, communities and the state; inclusion and exclusion, quality of life, and welfare policy.
We do this by:
- Developing theory;
- National and international research recognising different methodologies;
- Interpretive and critical social policy;
- Influencing and shaping policy and practice.
We play an active role in a range of research centres and institutes.
