Overview

I joined the School of English in February 2016. Prior to that I taught at Manchester Metropolitan University while completing my PhD in sociolinguistics. I have over 10 years' teaching experience.

Research

I completed my PhD in sociolinguistics in January 2016. My mixed methods research stands at the intersection of sociophonetics and second language acquisition.

My PhD examines the acquisition of vernacular dialect variation in English by adolescent Roma migrants attending a high school in Manchester. As one of the first studies to focus on Romanian Roma acquisition of vernacular English features, this work speaks to ongoing discussions about migration, integration, and social factors impacting upon language acquisition, as well as discussions concerning methodological approaches to and the importance of the study of the acquisition of sociolinguistic competence in a new language.

Teaching

I am passionate about providing relevant and innovative classes to my students. I have taught a wide range of topics across the fields of Sociolinguistics and Second Language Acquisition. I currently convene the following modules: ELL110 Varieties of English; ELL216 Language Politics and Language Planning; and ELL238: Special Subject: Language, Migration and Identity.
